Imagine your family name is a well-known worldwide brand . Now picture losing that name, possibly forever. That’s what the Ford family faced in 2006 when executive chairman Bill Ford, Jr., placed all the automaker’s assets as collateral to secure nearly $29 billion in loans and credit

The gamble worked. Ford Motor Co. paid off all those loans on September, 2011. On May 22, 2012, the automaker announced it had regained its symbol. “When we pledged the Ford Blue Oval as part of the loan package, we were not just pledging an asset. We pledged our heritage,” Ford said in a statement. “The Ford Blue Oval is one of the most recognized symbols in the world, and it is a source of great pride and passion, both inside and outside our company. Getting the Ford Blue Oval back feels amazing, and it is one of the best days that I can remember.”

This week, Ford unveiled the Blue Oval sign atop its West Coast headquarters in Irvine, California. Tom Brewer, general manager for the West Market Area, lead the ceremony. Said Brewer, “This [unveiling] is a metaphor for the success we have. You already read how successful Ford’s doing nationally. Well, it’s all coming out of the West.

“Last year and this year, the West market, particular California, has had the largest increase in vehicle sales year over year, with the largest market share increases coming out of this state. So these great, beautiful cars are being gobbled up by Californians, which has been a long time coming.”

The offices of Irvine Mayor Steven S. Choi, Congressman John Campbell and Assemblyman Donald P. Wagner sent representatives to congratulate Brewer and Ford Motor Co. Also attending the ceremony were Ford family members Calvin Ford and Henry Ford III.

NHTSA: Ford Fusion Energi Boasts 5-Star Safety

Fuel-economy and safety go hand in hand in the Ford Fusion Energi , as the high-efficiency plug-in hybrid recently scored a 5-star overall grade for occupant protection from the NHTSA. Of course, providing that kind of peace of mind is no surprise, since the traditionally powered Fusion, as well as the conventional hybrid model, also earned 5-star grades from NHTSA

Fuel-economy and safety go hand in hand in the Ford Fusion Energi, as the high-efficiency plug-in hybrid recently scored a 5-star overall grade for occupant protection from the NHTSA. Of course, providing that kind of peace of mind is no surprise, since the traditionally powered Fusion, as well as the conventional hybrid model, also earned 5-star grades from NHTSA. The IIHS also honored the Fusion with a Top Safety Pick+ designation after it passed the institute’s new, more rigorous safety evaluation.

(Note: The IIHS does not test electrified vehicles separately from their traditional counterparts as NHTSA does.)

To achieve these distinctions, Ford engineers designed all Fusion models with the company’s Personal Safety System, which integrates the latest safety belt technologies with advanced front-impact airbags. The stunning midsize sedan also offers driver-assistance features like lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, a rearview camera, hill start assist and an electronic parking brake.

The Fusion Energi provides an EPA-certified all-electric driving range of more than 20 miles, at a combined 100 MPGe, and then delivers marks of 44 mpg city/41 mpg highway/43 mpg combined when relying on its conventional hybrid powertrain for motivation.

“The Fusion Energi combines the highest possible safety ratings from NHTSA and great fuel economy, two things we know customers are looking for in their vehicles,” said Steve Kenner, global director of the Ford Automotive Safety Office. “Our strategy is to provide our customers with a range of powertrain options in our vehicles, while still leading in fuel economy in every segment that we compete.”

What Ford Atlas Concept Reveals of Truck’s Future

When Ford unveiled its Atlas concept at this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, auto fans collectively gasped in genuine surprise. We didn’t cover the show this year, so we jumped at the chance to check out the Atlas when it rolled out at the local Cars and Coffee meet. Our first impression of the concept was that it’s wide.

Our first impression of the concept was that it’s wide. As we later learned, the Atlas has nearly nine inches of extra width than the regular F-Series. Thus, you don’t fully realize that it’s also slightly longer than a standard SuperCab.

Mike Levine, truck communications manager for Ford, acted as our guide on all things Atlas. First, he pointed out the features that made the concept a Ford: the drop-down beltline, wraparound front bumper, round-wheel arches, and–of course–the chrome-clad, twin-nostril, two-bar front grille. After our eyes recovered from the sunlight hitting all the cladding, he covered the Atlas’ purpose and explained why the automaker built it in the first place.

The Ford Atlas concept is a design study, a hint where the company might be heading with its future vehicles. Many of the features, which Levine called “Active Air Dynamic” elements, aimed at improving fuel economy for trucks while maintaining their utility and even looks. These elements include:

Grille shutters that pop open and close to direct airflow around the truck
A front chin spoiler that drops during highway driving to smooth airflow
Wheel rims that, like the grille shutters, open and close to direct airflow

Levine said the elements increase fuel economy by 2-3 mpg, a significant improvement.

Other notable features included side-view mirrors with LED floodlights, a birds-eye view camera system, trailer hitch and backup assist, and hidden cargo ramps located below the truck bed, allowing owners to load, for example, an ATV. Levine also said the truck concept came equipped with Ford’s next-gen EcoBoost powertrain with stop/start engine technology. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a chance to peek under the hood, or get inside the cab, to verify this.

Overall, we found the visit to be worthwhile. Like the rest of the autosphere, we don’t know which features will ultimately make the cut and show up in future F-Series trucks. Personally, the wheel shutters, which were closed on the front tires of the concept and open on the back pair of wheels, are our favorite feature. They were faves for the Cars and Coffee crowd as well: Levine constantly had to stop curious bystanders from touching or poking them.
