When it debuts later this year, the 2012 Ford Focus Electric will help drivers battle high fuel prices as the most efficient five-seat vehicle in America, and it will bring even more benefits to California owners: In addition to its EPA rating of 110 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) in city driving, Ford’s all-electric Focus is now eligible for driver-only travel in California’s high-occupancy vehicle lanes, usually reserved for carpoolers, and also qualifies for a $2,500 state tax credit. That means Golden State customers can slash the price of the Focus Electric by a full $10,000 when the federal tax credit of $7,500 is taken into account. As for those fuel savings, just consider: It currently costs about $1-$2 to charge the Focus Electric overnight in California, providing drivers with an EPA-certified all-electric driving range of 76 miles (longer than the smaller Nissan LEAF).
