With the 2014 Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid in dealerships—and certified by the EPA to achieve 108 MPGe city/92 MPGe highway/100 MPGe combined in its all-electric mode—the Blue Oval closed out 2012 by setting a new quarterly record for hybrid sales. Ford delivered 19,554 hybrid vehicles to satisfied customers last year, and, uncoincidentally, those folks rated the brand No. 1 for fuel-efficiency customer satisfaction in a recent study by J.D.

After already trumping the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid in terms of better fuel efficiency, a longer electric-only driving range, more cabin space and a lower MSRP, the Ford C-MAX Energi has now stuck another fork into its “rival”: The Blue Oval recently confirmed that its plug-in hybrid utility vehicle also will have a higher top speed than the Toyota when both are in an all-electric driving mode. The C-MAX Energi will be capable of reaching 85 mph driven solely by its electric motor, while the Prius Plug-in peters out at 65 mph. As a result, the Ford will have no problem keeping up with highway traffic under electric power

The Ford C-MAX Energi will be able to travel more than 20 miles on electricity alone—and some 550 miles overall—when it arrives in dealerships later this year with bar-raising performance for a mass-market plug-in hybrid. Compared to the Toyota Prius Plug-in, for example, the C-MAX Energi will offer almost double the all-electric driving range, as well as a slight advantage in total travel capabilities and the exact same MPGe rating for combined all-electric “fuel” efficiency.
