Backed by a $555 million investment and 1,400 new employees, the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan recently became the U.S. headquarters for production of the 2014 Ford Fusion. The Flat Rock expansion increases the overall production capacity for the car to 350,000 units annually, and comes at an ideal time.
For the new model year, the 2014 Ford Fusion is expanding its wide range of available safety features with rear inflatable seatbelts that provide an added level of protection for those who need it most. “The inflatable belt is designed to help reduce head, neck and chest injuries for rear-seat passengers, often children and older passengers who can be more vulnerable to such injuries,” said Srinivasan Sundararajan, safety technical leader with Ford’s research and advanced engineering group.
To help drivers realize even better real-world fuel-economy results, Ford is recalibrating the control systems for hybrid versions of the Ford Fusion, Ford C-Max and Lincoln MKZ. The upgrades will improve efficiency in a wide range of driving scenarios, thanks to changes that include: Raising the all-electric top speed to 85 mph to allow more highway travel in EV mode Adjusting the operation of the vehicles’ active grille shutters to both reduce aerodynamic drag and improve engine-temperature management Fine tuning the climate-control systems to reduce energy consumption in both hot and cold weather Reducing the time it takes for the engine to warm up, which lets drivers enjoy all-electric driving and stop/start functionality sooner Now, the automaker hasn’t revealed whether these changes will affect the EPA ratings for the Ford Fusion Hybrid and friends, but drivers should keep in mind that the focus here was on delivering better performance and higher customer satisfaction in real-world driving.
